The War Shop
The War shop is a World War 2 Enthusiasts website
Upstart name: The War shop
Upstart URL: http://www.thewarshop.com
Date of launch: June 15, 2009
Tell us about your upstart business: I have always been interested in World War 2 History and the preservation of it. I am a hobby geek who likes to build WWII models. I also like to travel to various countries to see where the real history actually happened. After working in advertising as an Art Director for 14 years, I decided I wanted to work at something I was a little more passionate about. The War shop was born. What better time to start a business than the worst economic period in history since the Great Depression. People interested in WWII and hobbies, namely model building are the main target of the site. But there is also a lot of useful information shared at The War shop, including 2 blogs, one for Modelers and one for Travelers, a list and links to WWII Museums around the world, WWII Movies, Video, How-to and Reference Books.
Upstart launch budget?: $20,000
How are you funding your upstart?: Personal Savings, Credit Card(s)
What do you see in the future for your upstart? I see the The War shop changing and growing with new technology. And a new audience/demographic to bring new interest in my category niche.
How has the current economy affected your upstart? Absolutely. The prices of my wholesale products have risen, which makes it difficult to offer competitive prices for the consumer. Consumers are cutting back on spending, which hurts everyone.
Recommended services / advice: Have plenty of capital to survive on while you start your business. If you can, keep your day job. Have something customers want and will keep coming back for.
I have been learning as I go. Believe it or not, one of those Starting a Business for Dummies books is a great resource for beginners.
